5 Reasons Skate Parents Started Putting Padded Shorts Under Their Kid’s Jeans.

By Emma L.

Summary: Helmet, knee pads, elbow pads: every skate parent knows the list. But most falls land on the tailbone and hips, the one spot nobody pads.

All the force goes straight into the bone, and the soreness can linger for months.

Padded shorts cushion the landing, fit under regular clothes without looking bulky, and are recommended by thousands of parents.

5: It covers the spot where skaters land the most.

When my son falls on his tailbone or hips, there’s nothing between the ground and the bone. His body stops in an instant and all the force goes straight into that one spot, with no cushioning to spread it out. That’s why the soreness can linger for months, and why tailbone pain in particular can turn into a real injury. The fall itself isn’t the problem. Landing on bare bone is.

4: The soreness can stick around for months.

Texas Children’s Hospital reports that tailbone pain is common after a backward fall, and that it can linger for up to a few months. Falling backward is one of the most common ways my son goes down on his skateboard, and when he does, his tailbone takes the hit on concrete with nothing to cushion it. That’s why I put him in padded shorts. They cushion the landing and take the sting out of the impact, so those falls don’t have to turn into months of soreness.

3: I can see my kid's confidence go up.

My son used to fall a lot while learning his kickflip, and every time he landed on his bum, his tailbone was sore afterward. He’d get up slowly, and he never really went at the trick with full confidence. I saw it every time. After I got him padded shorts, that changed. The falls hurt less, so he’d get back up, try again, and commit to the trick. And when he finally landed his kickflip, I was so proud. Nothing beats watching your kid learn something new and being proud of it. I think the shorts can do the same for other kids too, because when the pain is less, they can fall, get back up and try again with full confidence.

2: No one can see he is even wearing them.

At first, my son didn’t want to wear them. He didn’t like the idea of people seeing that he had padding on under his clothes. But these are designed so the padding isn’t too thick to show through his jeans, and not so thin that it stops protecting him. They sit under his pants without changing how they look. Did you notice that the kid on the right is wearing the shorts underneath, and on the left he isn’t? It’s the same kid, in the same jeans. That’s why he actually put them on and kept wearing them. I was so glad, because if they’d looked bulky, he never would have worn them, and padding that stays in the drawer doesn’t protect anyone.

1: Parents and the kids love them.

What I really loved about these shorts is how well they’re made. The waist is adjustable, so they fit my son properly, and the sizes run true, so I didn’t have to guess. The padding is comfortable, and it cushions both his hips and his tailbone, which are the spots that take the hit when he falls. They’re also compressed, so the padding stays in place. When he goes down, he doesn’t have to stop and pull them back into position, he just gets up and keeps skating. He likes wearing them, and I like knowing they’re doing their job.
